Daughter of Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) has been hesitant to speak publicly about her father's legal troubles

MSNBC host Alicia Menendez, the daughter of Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), has spoken out for the first time since her father was indicted on corruption charges.

In an interview with the New York Times, Menendez said she is eager to establish herself as her own person and is anxious about being typecast as a political daughter.

"I'm not my father's daughter," Menendez said. "I'm my own person. I have my own career. I have my own family. And I'm going to continue to do my job the best way I know how."

Menendez's father has been indicted on charges of bribery, conspiracy and making false statements. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The trial is scheduled to begin in September.
