ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Mike Trout has signed a record-setting 12-year, $426.5 million contract extension with the Los Angeles Angels, the team announced Wednesday night.

The deal surpasses the previous record for total value, a 13-year, $365 million contract signed by Bryce Harper with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2019. Trout's average annual salary of $35.54 million also sets a new MLB record.

The Angels selected Trout with the 25th overall pick in the 2009 MLB Draft. He has since won three American League MVP awards and been named an All-Star nine times.

In 2019, Trout hit .291 with 45 home runs and 104 RBIs. He also led the league in on-base percentage (.460) and slugging percentage (.645).

Trout is considered one of the greatest players in baseball history. His signing is a major coup for the Angels, who have struggled in recent years. The team has not won a playoff series since 2009.

With Trout under contract for the next 12 years, the Angels hope to return to contention and challenge for their first World Series title since 2002.
