PSG were their own worst enemies in front of a sell-out crowd at Signal Iduna Park. Having taken the lead in controversial circumstances, they sat back and allowed Borussia Dortmund to control the game. Jadon Sancho leveled from the spot before half-time and the outstanding Jude Bellingham headed the home side in front midway through the second half. Lionel Messi hit the woodwork as PSG searched for an equalizer, and it was left to substitute Kylian Mbappe to level again with a deflected free-kick in injury time. With the tie level after extra time, PSG held their nerve in a penalty shootout to book their place in the semi-finals.
Borussia Dortmund can take heart from their performance, but they will be left to rue a lack of cutting edge in the final third. They also failed to deal with PSG's threat from set-pieces, with both goals coming from free-kicks. Erling Haaland was a peripheral figure for much of the game, and he will need to be at his best if Dortmund are to progress in the competition.
The second leg of this tie is set to be played at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday, April 25. Paris Saint-Germain will be looking to build on their slender aggregate lead, while Borussia Dortmund will need to score at least twice to keep their hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive.
