Joint operation by SDF and the Internal Security Forces “Al-Asayesh” to nab escaped IS prisoners in Syria
Operation launched after three high-profile IS detainees escaped from Ghweran prison in northeastern Syria
Security forces in northeastern Syria have launched a joint operation to recapture three high-profile ISIS prisoners who escaped from a prison in the city of Ghweran on Sunday 25th September 2022.
The three prisoners, identified as Mohammed Rauf Hamad Al-Shammary, Shaker Atrous Al-Hamoud, and Abu Hajar al-Iraqi, were part of a group of at least 10 detainees who managed to break out of the prison during a riot instigated by fellow IS supporters.
The prison break was a major embarrassment for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the US-backed force that controls much of northern and eastern Syria. Following the incident, the SDF has been subjected to intense criticism for failing to prevent the escape.
Security forces have set up checkpoints and are conducting searches in an effort to find the escaped prisoners
In response to the escape, the SDF and the Internal Security Forces have launched a major security operation in the area. Checkpoints have been set up, and security forces are conducting searches in an effort to find the escaped prisoners and restore order in the region.
The US-led coalition has also been providing support for the operation
The US-led coalition has also been providing support for the operation. The US military has been conducting airstrikes against ISIS targets, and is also providing intelligence and logistical support to the SDF and the Internal Security Forces.
According to local sources, at least two of the escaped prisoners have already been recaptured. However, the search for the remaining eight continues.
The security operation is expected to continue for several days
The security operation is expected to continue for several days. The SDF and the Internal Security Forces are determined to recapture the escaped prisoners and bring them to justice.
The escape of the ISIS prisoners is a serious security concern for the SDF and the US-led coalition. It is a reminder that the threat from ISIS is still very real, and that the group continues to pose a serious threat to the stability of the region.
