A Pillar of the Senate Passes at 92

Robert Carlyle Byrd, a towering figure in American politics, passed away on June 28, 2010, at the age of 92. Byrd, a Democrat from West Virginia, served an astonishing 51 years in the United States Senate, making him the longest-serving senator in US history.

A Self-Made Statesman

Born Cornelius Calvin Sale Jr., Byrd's humble beginnings did not predict the extraordinary career that lay ahead. He grew up in poverty as the son of a coal miner. Despite financial hardship, Byrd excelled academically, earning a law degree from American University Washington College of Law.

Byrd began his political journey in the West Virginia House of Delegates in 1947. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1952 and to the Senate in 1958. As a senator, Byrd rose through the ranks to become Senate Majority Leader from 1977 to 1981 and Senate President Pro Tempore from 2007 to 2010.

Byrd's political legacy is marked by his deep understanding of the Senate's traditions and his unwavering commitment to bipartisanship. He was a master of legislative procedure and played a pivotal role in shaping major policies. Byrd's legacy as a statesman will continue to inspire and influence generations to come.
